Restaurant Hedelund

The Hanging Girl

Restaurant Hedelund is linked to Carl Mørck’s first experience of speaking before a family audience and, years later, to the uneasy gathering after Ronny’s cremation. The same room that once held a childhood celebration becomes the setting for an anticipated family rupture, making the restaurant a place where time’s passage is both acknowledged and conspicuously denied.

Carl’s First Speech

Restaurant Hedelund was where Carl gave the first and only speech of his life. Newly confirmed, with his hair held in place by brilliantine, he turned to his parents to thank them for the party and cassette recorder. His hands shook; he was not yet almost an adult. His parents smiled, and his mother shed a tear. The recollection gives the restaurant an intimate association with family celebration and with Carl’s early, visibly nervous effort to speak in public.

The Gathering After Ronny’s Cremation

The later gathering took place in the very same room, on an overcast day. There were trays of open sandwiches and drinks available, while the family acted as though time had not passed and the occasion were less unpleasant than it was. Ronny had been taken to the crematorium, but Carl could not regard the gathering as safely settled: even dead, Ronny might still produce a surprise. Carl looked around, wondering which guest would rise with a piece of paper and detonate the family conflict he expected Ronny to have arranged.

Food, Ceremony, and the Will

A clink against a beer bottle preceded the speech of one of Carl’s second cousins on his mother’s side, who explained that the family attorney had asked him to read a brief statement enclosed in Ronny’s will. The cousin was not one of Ronny’s acquaintances and, in Carl’s estimation, may have been present simply to increase the numbers. Before reading the statement, he thanked the Restaurant Hedelund staff for the food and invited the guests to toast Ronny, who had paid for the gathering. Most guests laughed and raised their glasses; Carl did not. The restaurant’s food and service thus frame a polite public ritual that cannot conceal Carl’s expectation of an accusation.

Narrative Significance

The room’s recurrence creates a pointed contrast between Carl’s childhood gratitude and his adult suspicion. In the earlier scene, a speech closes a family celebration with smiles and a tear; in the later one, a speech drawn from Ronny’s will threatens to turn a gathering into a reckoning. Restaurant Hedelund is not merely a backdrop for both occasions: its familiar room makes the effort to pretend that time has not passed especially visible, while the toast and the unread statement hold convivial ceremony beside the prospect of conflict.
